Top Performer does not Equal Leader Part 3

by Megan Bullard on December 8, 2009

A leader’s main priority should be to continually develop his or her team members.

A leader’s main priority should be to continually develop his or her team members. Development can be achieved through a number of methods, and it is a leader’s job to ensure that his employees are being groomed into valuable professionals. The key to developing others is being able to identify their needs, and being able to construct a plan to meet or exceed those needs. This is the sign of a true leader. Developing others is no easy task, but if a leader is naturally equipped with the behaviors and skills necessary to help others, she will be more effective at her job.
Leadership is a complex and often arduous task, but it doesn’t have to be if the leader has the appropriate skills and behaviors.

Leaders should be able to:

  • communicate
  • motivate
  • develop their team members in order to make the team as productive as possible

Assessments can identify leaders before they are promoted into those positions. A natural leader may not be as easy to spot as you think, and it is important to identify leadership qualities before giving someone control of an entire team or division. Leaders are the foundation of business, and finding them is as easy as assessing the talent you already have.

This is Part 3 in our series about competent leadership. Review Part 1 and Part 2 to learn what is required in order to be an effective leader.
